The original lens came from France, manufactured by Barbier & Bernard. It came to Point Vicente from Alaska where it had been in use for 40 years. The nearby park offers excellent opportunities for enthusiastic whale watchers. You can join them from December through Mid-May at the Interpretive Center's 150-seat outdoor amphitheater. Take binoculars to catch a closer glimpse of the migrating gray whales.

There is no damage to this building as far as I can see, though it received an awful shaking. So severe were the shocks that it broke two mantles on light…and about half emptied the base of lens of mercury, spattering over lantern and downstairs. Expected any minute to have lens topple over, and at one time had grave doubts of building standing. By keeping one man as near lens as was safe, managed to keep light burning and lens moving.

The Point Arena Lighthouse was first lit in 1870, but the structure you see today was built after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake destroyed the original. It's located in Mendocino County about three hours north of San Francisco off of Highway 1 and is perhaps most famous for being one of the tallest lighthouses on the west coast (it's tied with the Pigeon Point Lighthouse). On December 16, 2006, a homecoming celebration for the lens was held at the lighthouse, featuring a parade, free cake and ice cream, and fireworks. Councilwoman Janice Hahn presented a congratulatory plaque to the Point Fermin Lighthouse Society, and John Olguin explained the quest to recover the lens. After the program, the public was invited inside the lighthouse to view the lens. In 2002, a $2.6-million-dollar face-lift was initiated on the lighthouse. The makeover was completed in 2004, and the before and after pictures are quite dramatic. In addition to a new coat of paint, the lighthouse also received new plumbing, electrical work, alarm systems, air conditioning, and period furnishings.

They do offer a few tours every year up to the light if you want to see that portion and visit on the right day. From the parking area, you will want to head out on the paved road that will take you to the lighthouse. That is a tough question, but we highly recommend Point Bonita, Point Reyes, and Point Arena as they offer a great experience. All of the lighthouses below are wonderful to visit and have an interesting story to tell. Some lighthouses such as the ones at St. George Reef and Mile Rocks are far offshore and are best viewed through binoculars from the nearest mainland beaches. A man who set himself on fire on Friday afternoon outside the Lower Manhattan courthouse where former President Donald Trump’s historic criminal trial is taking place has died, according to police. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the light at Point Fermin was extinguished in 1941. The lens room atop the lighthouse was removed, and it was turned into a lookout tower for spotting enemy vessels. The lighthouse is owned by the City of Los Angeles and managed by Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.
